Seminar and Other stuff….
I taught a seminar this weekend in New Jersey, about 1 1/2 hours away from Kings Park. It was pretty good. I had a lot of fun and I got to teach people a little about special fx and 3D stuff. Some of the material is a little bit heavy, especially if you’re just sitting there watching and not doing, but overall, it was a great experience. Hopefully they’ll want me to come back next year and rewrite some of the lectures. Some people were a bit let down by some of the material, especially the Special FX material. They seemed more interested in some of the work I did in films and on my reel rather than the actual lecture slides. I personally think the lecture slides need an upgrade. I would love to be a part of the conference next year and rewrite the lectures to make them more interesting and up to date.
The actual weekend was a bit crazy. I head out there, I’m running late because of traffic, and I also wasn’t on the list so I had a little bit of trouble at the front desk. After the lecture that day (Friday), I head over for an interview at 4pm, he offered me the job on the spot, but I can’t work for $35,000 a year, and that’s what his offer was. I wanted $50,000, which is reasonable I think.
So after the interview, I come home, pass out for a few hours because I didn’t get much sleep the night before, then after the nap, I wake up and start working on the 3D presentation to make sure I have all the slides together and all of the material covered. Long story short, I didn’t go to sleep that night. So I leave, get there a little early and prep my lecture. After the first lecture, I head out to my car, pass the hell out for a little while in the parking lot (I rested for a good 2 hours but slept for only 15 minutes max). I head back in at 2pm, the lecture is at 2:30pm, and I talk to Mark, the tech editor for Videomaker Magazine. After that, I teach the lecture, then head home. I go to the supermarket for groceries thinking I’m going to cook dinner. I get home and pass the fuck out. I slept for a long time, woke up at 8am. I had so many interruptions in sleep because I kept running out to the living room to make sure the render (for another film I’m editing) is going correctly. It’s still going right now. I had to run a few corrections and rerun the render. After that, I believe it’s off to Brooklyn to drop off the DVD. Crazy shit. I wonder what’s up this week. Can’t wait to see!
Aside from that, everything seems to be getting a little bit better. I had two interviews, both offered me the jobs so I have to wait and see what they are willing to pay, otherwise it’s back to the drawing board because there’s no way I can work for crap money. I have rent, a car, food, bills, etc. so I really can’t let someone jerk me on the money and take advantage.
